I Haven't tried it on the buses, but it has worked with several other merchants in London including the black cabs. I am assuming it must be something with how TFL have implemented Apple Pay. A quick search of a coup,e of travel forums (Trip Advisor and Flyer Talk) have returned discussions with people reporting similar issues.

I have been trying my Delta Reserve AMEX and my Chase Sapphire Preferred Visa. I have now loaded my Platinum AMEX and my USAA Platinum Master Card to my Apple Pay wallet. Am going to give it one more try today with those cards. If it doesn't work, it's really not worth the hassle. Shame too, as things like this are what will prevent widespread adoption of Apple Pay.

Worked for me last time I tried. I'm using a UK debit card but I don't think it ought to matter.

See https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/contactless/other-methods-of-contactless-p ayment/apple-pay

Aha.

If you use Apple Pay with a payment card issued outside the UK you may be charged overseas transaction fees. Some may not work; check with your card issuer.
